1957 Pontiac Bonneville Fuel-Injected Convertible
1957 Pontiac Bonneville Fuel-Injected Convertible
In the mid-1950s, many regarded Pontiac as a producer of reliable yet mundane family cars. With the January introduction of the new top-of-the-line, limited production, fuel-injected Bonneville Convertible and all new “Star Flight” styling, all that was about to change. For the first time since the 1930’s, gone was the trademark “Silver Streak” hood trim giving the cars a much cleaner look. This was the idea of Pontiac General Manager Semon E. “Bunkie” Knudsen in an effort to modernize and update the Harley Earl styling on bodies that Pontiac shared with Chevrolet. It was Knudsen who coined the phrase, “You can sell an old man a young man’s car but you can’t sell a young man an old man’s car.” He was right. Pontiac dominated the NASCAR circuit for 1957 and helped coin the phrase, “Race on Sunday. Sell on Monday.”

Pontiac built 630 Bonneville Convertibles for ’57, one for each of its 630 dealers. Every car was fitted with a Rochester fuel injection system and all but 12 of the cars were painted Kenya Ivory (White) with either red or blue trim. 8 cars were finished in Charcoal Grey with matching leather interiors accented in white, and only 1 was originally finished in Raven Black.
The new luxury Bonneville was equipped with every power-operated feature imaginable at the time making it the fastest Pontiac ever produced . . . and a price to match. At $5,782.00 it was $1,000.00 more than a fuel-injected Corvette and more than twice the price of a Star Chief Convertible! Power was supplied by a 315 h.p. 347 c.i.d. V-8 with Rochester mechanical fuel injection affording a 0-60mph time of 8.1 seconds.
